While the Boston Celtics are certainly early on favorites to win the East, if not the Title this season, new GM Matty is looking to pick up where Danny Ainge left off.
"We've got, well maybe the best three guys put on the floor at the same time in over a decade by any one team, but.. we think we can still improve on what we have." The teams new GM stated today.
The Celtics though are not rushing to pull the trigger on any trades just yet. Sources close to the team have indicated that the team is waiting to see what happens in the early days of Free Agency first.
GM Matty is already on record saying he feels he has several holes he wants filled, giving other teams a good indication of what the team wants, another quality PG to either back up second year player Rajon Rondo, or if they can improve on Rondo, someone HE can be the backup for, and Another Big, preferably someone who can play both positions.
Interestingly though, Matty hasnt called on many Bigs in the F/A pool just yet, in fact its being suggested that he's being very tight pocketed in terms of who he's willing to use his last two assests, the MLE and LLE exeptions, neither according to rumor, has he been in contact with many point guards.
"He's trying to bring on board the most talented individuals out there in f/a regardless of their position," our source stated, He figgures if he can land certian players, that then leaves him with more assests to move as the team see's the need.
Indeed, while some teams are actively looking to make deals NOW, the Celtics feel they could win the title NOW as they are, of course they want to improve their team regardless of how good they think they might be, and the team has stated their not looking at just this season either.
When Matty took over the reigns as GM after Ainge's suden departure he stated that, "The team is constructed to compete for a title, this season, next and beyond. My job now is simply, find ways to make sure that remains the case. We're Looking for titles 17, 18 and up into the 20's. We intend to build a dynesty here. "
If the team is truley to look beyond the next couple seasons, one must wonder, will the team look to add more players with 2-3 seasons left on their contracts and heading into the twilight of their careers, or rather, will they be looking to draw younger players and build around a core that now includes Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins?
For Celtic fans, the answer will soon be found, likely by the players the team manages to land in f/a.. Young or old, the team will likely follow suit bringing in other players in the same age bracket once they do begin making trades.
